POSTDOCTORAL RESARCHER POSITION in Sociology within NORFACE project on inequality across the life course
Job description
The University of Lausanne (UNIL) promotes learning, research and living and hosts 14’100 students and nearly 3’800 collaborators, professors, and researchers. Ideally situated along the lake of Geneva, near Lausanne’s city center, its campus brings together over 120 nationalities.
The Life Course and Inequality Research Centre (LINES) of the University of Lausanne and the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research LIVES on life course and vulnerability are looking for a postdoctoral researcher for the NORFACE project ‘Critical Life Events and the Dynamics of Inequality’’ (2017-2020). This transnational research programme will be carried out jointly by the University of Amsterdam (prof. Leopold, Bol, Kalmijn, van de Werfhorst), University of Lausanne (prof. Oesch, Studer), University of Oxford (prof. Monden, Bukodi), and Stockholm University (prof. Härkönen, Thomson).
The project studies the impact of two critical life events – job loss and union dissolution – on the life trajectories of adults and their children. The project’s objectives are to understand (1) how job loss and divorce contribute to the accumulation of disadvantage over the life course; (2) what mechanisms explain the unequal impact of these events; and (3) which policies are effective in targeting these mechanisms in order to reduce inequality.
Work will be conducted within five research groups that apply comparable designs to the analysis of longitudinal data in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The groups will develop a common theoretical framework and come together in regular meetings including all junior and senior members.
The postdoctoral position offered at the University of Lausanne will contribute to the project by focusing on the Swiss case and analysing Swiss panel data (SHP, COCON, Swiss National Cohort). During the three years of employment, the successful applicant has the possibility to make short research stays at the three other universities (Amsterdam, Oxford and Stockholm).
Requirements
The ideal candidate holds the following credentials:
• a PhD in sociology or another relevant social science discipline, obtained after October 1st, 2015
• strong statistical expertise
• experience in the analysis of large-scale longitudinal datasets
• good skills in Stata and/or R
• good writing skills
• fluency in English, spoken and written
• a good research and publication record relative to the career stage
• organisational and presentation skills
Conditions of employment
• Starting date: October 1st, 2017 or to suit
• Full-time position (100%)
• Duration of employment: 3 years
• Place of work: University of Lausanne, Géopolis
• Yearly gross salary: 82,558 Swiss francs in the 1st year, 87,345 Swiss francs in the 3rd year (corresponding to roughly 75,000€ in the 1st year, 79,800€ in the 3rd year)
