Position Announcement: Assistant Professor Department of Public Health Sciences, UC Davis

The University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, Department of Public Health Sciences invites applications for a faculty position at the Assistant Professor level with expertise in public health and poverty policy research and teaching. This is a full-time tenure track appointment. Successful applicants must have a Ph.D. or Dr.P.H. in public health, epidemiology, economics, sociology, anthropology or a related field; or an M.D. with an accompanying public health graduate degree. The candidate must have experience developing and conducting population-based research and a focus on studying the social, behavioral and economic determinants of health. Special preference will be given to applicants with strong research potential in social and/or applied epidemiology. The mission of the Department of Public Health Sciences is to improve the health of people through population-based approaches by developing and evaluating educational programs, conducting epidemiologic research, engaging in public service and developing policy and other translational outcomes. The Department covers a broad area of public health domains with a focus on health promotion and disease and injury prevention, occupational and environmental health, cancer, health care policy, aging, ethical issues, reproductive, women’s, children’s, rural, minority, immigrant and global health. The position will be fully located within the Department of Public Health Sciences, but the successful candidate will be expected to participate in the research and dissemination activities of the Center for Poverty Research and the Center for Healthcare Policy and Research. The Center for Poverty Research is an interdisciplinary center at UC Davis with the mission of promoting non-partisan academic research on poverty and inequality, disseminating that research, and training the next generation of poverty scholars. The Center for Healthcare Policy and Research conducts research pertinent to health services access, delivery, cost and outcomes, with an emphasis on healthcare policy. Both Centers provide research support to affiliated faculty, host a variety of national experts in many disciplines for seminars and conferences, and provide support for the translation and dissemination of academic research to a broader audience.

Among other responsibilities,the faculty member hired for this position will:

Strengthen the Public Health Sciences Department’s social epidemiology expertise and promote interdisciplinary collaboration in the area of poverty research and social determinants of health;

Develop and teach courses in public health with a focus on poverty and social determinants of health, and mentor graduate students and trainees in related disciplines;

Establish a research agenda and obtain extramural funding to foster the development of an emphasis in focused areas of social epidemiology and the poverty-related determinants of health

Conceive, prepare and submit grant and contract proposals to support her/his research agenda;

Participate in service activities including committee appointments, public or community service;

Work cooperatively and collegially within a diverse environment.

Ideally, candidates would be interested developing or applying methods to measure the impact of poverty on health in population settings and identifying ways in which poverty and other social determinants may act in concert with or exacerbate or modify the effects of environmental, nutritional and other influences. A focus on U.S. poverty and policy related to disparities including but not limited to labor markets and poverty, children and intergenerational transmission of poverty, the social safety net, and immigration, is preferred. Regionally, there is a great opportunity to develop approaches to determine the incremental impact of poverty on health given California’s racially and ethnically diverse population with associated health disparities. Candidates will also participate in professional activities at local,state, regional, and national levels including disseminating knowledge through peer-reviewed publications, participation in and presentation at interdisciplinary and scientific meetings, and professional academic outreach and engagement. Research experience and a publication track record are required. Experience with extramurally funded projects documented by publications is preferred. The successful candidate should have experience teaching at the university level.
