Graduate student, Tara McKay, recently testified about effects that California budget cuts would have on HIV treatment.  As a result of public testimony which included presentations of research findings by Tara and her colleagues, the HIV Commission voted NOT to adopt the FY 2010 funding allocations as presented (which proposed eliminating funding for Nutrition Support [food] and Treatment Education) and to remand the FY 2010 funding allocations back to the Priorities and Planning Committee for further discussion.

Bill Mason Career Celebration:

On Saturday, June 13 CCPR hosted a celebration of the career of Bill Mason, a long-time UCLA professor and CCPR faculty affiliate, who retired in 2007.  A day long academic program at CCPR consisted of informal discussions of the many areas of social science to which Bill has contributed – including cohort analysis, multilevel analysis, measurement, and the demography of China – as well as Bill’s remarkable achievements as teacher and mentor. An evening reception and dinner at the Fowler Museum courtyard included reminiscences and toasts to Bill.  Approximately 50 people attended the event, including distinguished out of town visitors Dick Campbell (U. of Illinois-Chicago), Barbara Entwisle (U. of North Carolina), Wang Feng (UC-Irvine), Jim House (U. of Michigan), Herb Smith (U. of Pennsylvania), Rafe Stolzenberg (U. of Chicago), Hal Winsborough (U. of Wisconsin), and Yu Xie (U. of Michigan); and recent CCPR alumni Elizabeth Bruch (U. of Michigan), Yao Lu (Columbia), Vida Maralani (Yale), Christine Schwartz (U. of Wisconsin), Hiromi Ono (Washington State), and Nick Wolfinger (U. of Utah).  Bill’s wife, Karen Eustis, and son, Adron Mason, also attended.  The event was organized by Rob Mare, Hiromi Ono, Mike Rothschild, Judy Seltzer, Herb Smith, and Nick Wolfinger, with the assistance of Wendy Tieu and Dave Ash.
